In 2004, MAN Diesel Australia was awarded a contract by COMALCO to supply and install six 9L32/40 diesel generating sets at their new Weipa Power Station, which is located on the Cape York peninsular in far north Queensland.  The new 25 MW power station is the main source of electricity for one of the world’s largest bauxite mines, which has recently been expanded in response to the world’s growing demand for aluminium.  The power station also supplies electricity to the town of Weipa which houses most of the mine’s employees and their families.

Efficient and adaptable solution

The 9L32/40 engines were chosen for this remote site because of their proven reliability, high efficiency and low maintenance costs.  The engines currently operate on diesel oil but may be converted to operate on natural gas if and when this alternative fuel becomes available.
