The Australian Shipbuilder Tenix Defence selected MAN Diesel 12VP185 and 12V28/33D engines to power a fleet of Patrol Vessels for the Royal New Zealand Navy's fleet replacement program. The order received by MAN Diesel Australia covers the propulsion diesels, gearboxes, diesel generators and the propulsion system integration for all the Patrol Vessels.

In total, four Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPV) and two Ice Class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) have been equipped with MAN Diesel engines. This allows them an operational range of 3,000 nautical miles for the IPV and 6,000 nautical miles for the OPV, in conjunction with a maximum speed of 25 and 22 knots respectively.

High performance at reduced operational cost

As well as fully satisfying the technical requirements of the vessels, the selection of the VP185 and 28/33D series engines will provide the Royal New Zealand Navy with reduced operational cost and minimise their cost of ownership. Both engines provide extended periods between overhaul and minimised downtime for routine maintenance. In addition, excellent fuel consumption and reduced lube oil consumption impact positively on the vessels' in-service capabilities.
