With a background in Financial Management as well as Business Development, Larry Silva combines strong business acumen with extensive experience in a range of engineering environments, in particular the power generation, diesel engineering, defence and marine industries.
Leaving Alstom mid-2000 to start up MAN Diesel in Australia, Larry quickly set about establishing a company with local focus, which has an understanding of the Australian business culture and regulatory environment. As a result, MAN Diesel & Turbo today enjoys an enviable reputation as a market leader in gas and diesel engine solutions, with strong turnkey power station capability within Australia.
Larry has a very clear objective for MAN Diesel & Turbo - to move the decision making process closer to the customer, in every aspect. “Key issues, whether it's to do with pricing, design or a technical challenge can be brought down to a local level. It allows us not only to react more quickly, but ultimately build trust and become an advocate for the customer. We want to build an Australian business with European technology,” he says.
Investing in his staff is a priority for Larry who, employing only the most highly skilled engineers, ensures there's still a focus on professional development, including training at the Dr Rudolf Diesel Training Academy in Germany. Larry attributes much of MAN Diesel & Turbo's success to his team and a measure of his success is that the core people who joined at the start are still with him today.
Living in the hub of the city, Larry enjoys scenic walks in the numerous parks and gardens that surround Sydney Harbour. Larry is also a fan of science fiction and animation.
