MAN RECENT WINS

MAN engines have had a lot of significant wins lately. We don’t often blow our own trumpet but we believe there are some very good stories to be told about our engines and we’d like more people to know about them.

See below for a snapshot list and scroll further for more detail.

Sydney Ferries - Emerald Class

A fleet of public transport ferries have been big news in Sydney. Ongoing issues have resulted in all 4 vessels being removed from service for modifications and engine replacements.

MAN has been selected as the engine provider to the fleet.

MAN engines have been powering the Manly Fast Ferry service and our track record here has been a major reason for MAN winning this new contract.
MAN has a proven history and experience of working closely with stakeholders. We provide real solutions and accurate forecasts of results.

Manly Fast Ferries

We’ve been powering this essential service for over 7 years now. The ferry service started with 4 vessels and has grown to 6 now,  As some engines have now reached 20,000 hours of service, NRMA have taken advantage of the RE-MAN program. Engines are sent to Germany for a full factory re-build, guaranteed to be returned back to “as new” condition and power. This is a great sign of how highly regarded the MAN engines are by NRMA.
The results here have spoken for themselves, with massive fuel savings and supreme reliability being the reasons NRMA Manly Fast Ferries maintain their partnership with MAN engines

Sealink Kanagaroo Island

MAN have been selected to power two new boats to service Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Each car carrying ferry is powered by four V12-1000 Heavy duty rated MAN engines.
The is the first project utilising IMO Tier 3 engines by MAN in Australia, using MAN’s own modular SCR system to achieve this.
Even though Australia standards don’t mandate the Tier 3 standard, Sealink were committed to operating sustainably and sensitively in this important ecosystem and tourism market.
They selected MAN engines based on the environmental credentials of MAN engines, as well as the fuel savings and reliability MAN offers.

Rottnest Ferries - Quokka II

Quokka II has been operating with its new MAN engines for it’s first summer season. Fuel logs are updated daily and we’re exceeding our predicted fuel savings of over 30% after removing another brand of engine. It’s a significant saving, giving the owners an eye opening experience and introduction to MAN engines.
The operators report an enhanced crew and customer experience, with noise and vibration vastly reduced and no more detectable smoke experienced as with the previous engines. These are important considerations for operators in the tourism industry.

WA Fisheries & Qld Marine Parks

We’ve re-powered or installed engines in new builds for 7 boats between these two state governments lately.

MAN has won these contracts primarily on reduced fuel savings, comfort and environmental credentials.

Significant improvements in crew comfort have been achieved with reductions in noise and vibration, extending outside of work times to sleeping cabins.

Both State Departments have been impressed with the MAN engine deliverables in their first experience with us and as a result have ensured we tender on subsequent projects. To keep winning them is an honour and a reflection of the strength of the MAN product. It’s important to note that as Government departments, these operators select engines on their merits while remaining brand neutral.

Zaphira - Lloyd Stevenson boats

This new build is featured in Powerboat magazine’s March 2024 (click here for the article).  Builder Lloyd had previously been on board two other MAN powered Upfold designed 18m Sports Fishers – Peregrine and Crazy Diamond.

Impressed as he was by the lack of noise and vibration as well as the performance, he was keen to include MAN in the mix for his returning clients and their new build, Zaphira. The clients agreed and no one has been disappointed.

The boat achieves massive fuel savings compared to similar sized vessels as well as the famous smooth acceleration and ride, responsive controls and low noise MAN engines are famous for.

NZ - Pachoud and Vodoo Yachts

Premium bespoke builders Pachoud Yachts and their sister brand Voodoo Yachts have embraced MAN Engines in a big way. They are innovators in hull design and hydro-foil technology.

They have discovered the world’s best power to weight marine engines, with the smallest footprint and highest torque at low revs is the secret to ensuring their designs get the lift they need to rise to the foil.

NZ - Valder Yachts & Others

The NZ boating industry has always punched way above its weight on a global scale – think America’s Cup wins.

MAN is experiencing strong demand from many NZ builders and designers. Once they experience the difference MAN brings to their vessels, they are hooked.

Their customers are discerning. In Valder Yachts’ case,
NZ’s fastest man on water, chasing speed records.
Whether its fibreglass, carbon fibre or aluminium, NZ boat builders produce to the highest quality standards possible.
MAN engines complete this picture.

Dreadnought & WA Lobster Industry

Dreadnought is a re-powered lobster fishing boat based in Geraldton, the centre of the WA industry. The owners report a 40% fuel saving and are extremely happy with overall performance and experience.

A 1000hp V8 is the power plant in this case and many others, becoming a re-powering standard.

WA Rock Lobster (aka crayfish) is Australia’s most valuable single-species wild capture fishery and the world’s first fishery to receive certification for ecological sustainability from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Many fisherman choose MAN engines and enjoy the fuel savings, making marginal days palatable and putting money direct into their back pocket, whilst also enjoying vastly reduced noise and a clean working environment.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farms

Very pleased with the performance of the MAN aboard Big Ned during our trip North from Geraldton to Cygnet Bay.

We covered 1084 nautical miles during the 4 ½ day passage with an average speed of 9.8 knots for the voyage…

The fuel consumption of the MAN was nothing short of amazing.  Overall we have averaged 31.7 litres per hour.

The closest I can compare to with the previous engine is 9.5 knots with 55 litre per hour consumption.  That is a whopping 42% saving.

The MAN calculated fuel use is a little higher than actual used fuel.  Approx 6.5% high.  Overall I found this to be more than satisfactory and as it turns out this slightly high reading actually closely compares to actual fuel used by the MAN and the Genset.  Over the 4 ½ days the MAN fuel used was about 20 litres different to that used by the MAN and Genset combined.  Very useful I think.

The noise from the MAN is also a vast improvement on what we had.  At our cruising rpm for this trip it was very comfortable on deck and we could easily have a conversation without having to raise our voices.

Inside the wheelhouse with the door closed we could have normal conversations at any rpm.

Commercial FISHING

Very impressed with the engine performance and would have no problem recommending these engines.

Many thanks and kind regards

Charter Boats

The Charter boat industry is another area of success for MAN engines. Many vessels are former fishing or commercial boats. Tourism businesses must have extreme reliability to maintain the reputation and receive forward bookings and avoid cancellations. Fuel is major cost input.

On the East Coast, Bobby Jones is a retired Game Fishing skipper legend who fished the east coast of Australia for over 40 years. It’s fair to say he’s seen his fair share of boats and engines in his time. His boat Maverick is now running around with twin MAN i6-850’s and he is very happy and impressed.

In the west, Apache Charters head out to remote islands off the Kimberley, some of the most pristine and untouched places on the planet. Lady Grace traded up an old MAN with 20,000 hours after agonising over whether to rebuild it or not. A tough decision given how brilliant the engine had been.

Apache now enjoy smoother running and fuel savings thanks to a new V8-1000.

The distances covered are vast and Apache made the switch just as fuel prices were taking a jump, a decision they are very happy with.

Commercial TOURISM

Lamborghini

Finally, not an ANZ example but an important one.

When Lamborghini developed their own boat, they needed to decide on an engine that could do their brand justice.

They could choose any engines in the world but chose MAN. Enough said.
